Cancel Culture
Cancel culture, in my own personal opinion, is good to an extent. It allows individuals/groups to be exposed to the consequences of their actions and permits them to grow from their wrongs. Unfortunately, there are many imperfections in this pursuit of perfection.
There are people who have garnered so much support in their career that they have been deemed, for lack of better words, "non cancellable." These personalities have done controversial things only for internet lurkers to completely ignore these actions. This presents a flaw in cancel culture: if the public controls it, there will always be a bias towards those that are especially beloved.

The Harry Potter series |
Alongside Kanye West, J.K. Rowling also is one of the most controversial artists of our time. Known for her Harry Potter series, Rowling was a fairly loved author among the younger generations, whereas, after her anti-trans views were unveiled, many expressed their distaste for her. She has been canceled, but there are still so many that show their love for her because of Harry Potter.
No matter how much an artist is beloved, people should be held accountable for their actions, which is the main goal of cancel culture.
I agree with you that people should be held accountable no matter how beloved they are. I think that these people maintain status because they reach the audience of people who agree with their hate speech and support their actions, which is extremely disheartening to see.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you talked about people's refusal to stop supporting their favorite media because of questionable creators! It seems like however much accountability we try to place on creators, there will always be die-hard superfans that are either simply being selfish or even agree with the problematic things. - Zahra
ReplyDeleteI like how you mentioned that people should be held accountable as media figures, and how there are always a certain fanabse that supports them ignorantly. Love your take on this!
