To Be a Woman Is To Perform

In regards to the June 2022 event of the repeal of Roe v. Wade, The Onion's response was to create an article that brought attention to the issue. Because of the Supreme Court's, abortion is not allowed in states within the U.S., which is highly destructive of basic reproductive rights. The Onion masterfully conveys this calamity in the satirical article, "Women Explain How They'd Like To Have Their Bodies Restricted Next," that allows the audience--Americans--to urge for reproductive rights, by using a parody of an interview and an absurd tone.

Because this is an interview, The Onion includes "accounts" of different women and their desire for diverse ways the U.S. Supreme Court can control them. But, that's not entirely true; The Onion creates women and their dialogue in an attempt to forge a caricature that blindly agrees with the Supreme Court's decisions. The usage of fake people and dialogue makes up the entire premise of the article: to be a mock interview, and a parody.

Throughout the entire piece, an absurd tone is used. One of the women, Florence Martin, Retired, states that "'Thinking can be quite taxing sometimes. I wouldn't be opposed to mandatory lobotomies'". No one would willingly want a lobotomy, thus showing how these women are the American that the Supreme Court envisions--controlled, and only for the purpose of showing support to unreasonable causes. These are not the true views of women from the United States, but rather an extreme exaggeration of what the Supreme Courts believes are women.
